Chapter 1

Dear Journal,

It’s been a while since I was last in prison. I’d forgotten just how horrible it was. The last time I’d been on a prison ship heading for Morrowind. This time I’m in the Imperial City Prison in Cyrodiil, the capital province of Tamriel. I’m not enjoying it one little bit. The last thing I remember was having a drink with some friends at the Bloated Float, then a brawl and suddenly I was pounced on by some Imperial guards. The Dunmer, or Dark Elf, in the cell opposite is the worst. When I’d woken up he began to make me feel even worse than I was already feeling. He insulted my homeland of Valenwood. He told me about how I was going to die in here; I already knew that I was going to die. But I didn’t want to know exactly HOW it was going to happen!

Dear Journal,

I found out the name of that Dark Elf across from me. His name is Valen Dreth, and I swear that as soon as I get chance I’m going to kill him! He insulted my home again. He's been saying how I must feel that the walls are closing in on me. What does he know about how I feel!?

Dear Journal,

The Emperor is escaping through a secret passage, the entrance to which is through my cell. I guess I’ll be free from here sooner than I think.

Dear Journal,

The Emperor is dead! Assassins attacked us. He saved my life but it cost him his! Before he died he’d given me the dragon amulet. He said there was another heir and that a man called Jauffre could help me find him. But first I’ve got to get out of the sewers.

Dear Journal,

I’m out of the sewers. I’ve just arrived at the Imperial City. All I have to do now is build up my life again. I’m a free man. A beggar at the moment, but a free man nonetheless! I like the sound of the words “free man” so I’m saying it again. I’m a free man. I have freedom, and it feels good.
